Oh wow.. After reading just the introduction of this book, I am very excited to read it. The original British novel included the controversial last chapter, showing how someone can change from being a bad person to a good one. This was left out in the American version because Anthony Burgess's New York publisher believed that it was a sellout. That it was too "British". In this version, the "new American version", The last chapter is included, which makes me want to get to it see how controversial it really is. Reading the first chapter was quite difficult. I didnt know that the words in this book were so "out there". I didn't think of this book as being one that the author would go to making his own language. I look forward to continuing this book and furthering my knowledge of this strange language.
I have not tackled this novel because I'm afraid the violent content would be too disturbing. However, I am a bit ridiculous because the world IS violent. I don't know why I avoid confronting that. Do you think Burgess is trying to make people face the ugly irrationality of violence?
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I have seen the movie and assumed that broke away from the book. As mentioned here, It seems that it has. It changes the story (a little) and the style is greatly enhanced. It still haunts me today.
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the weirdest books/movies i have seen, aside from that it is a great story with a lot of twists. Hope you enjoy reading it.
ReplyDeleteNew languages are fun but completely confusing! I remember in the Eragon books that the author invented the troll and elf languages but I don't remember a lick of it. Why is it controversial? How have the reviews been of it?
ReplyDeleteThat's crazy he would make up an his own language but neat! I guess if it would have caught on that it would have been pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to know why the last chapter is so controversial. I love is when books make people mad, it seems silly to get mad over a book if you don't like it then don't read it! Silly people.
